How long have you been doing what you do, and how did you become a Transformational Health Coach?
The best way to answer this question is to share with you a defining moment in my life…that brought me to where I am today – coaching people like you on exactly what to do to reverse prediabetes. That defining moment in my life happened in the spring of 2010. I had been gaining weight over the years and struggling to lose it. I had other strange things happening also, like hair loss from the top of my head (which was now looking like a bald spot), I was very tired all the time, and drinking much more than I used to while still feeling thirsty. When I caught myself leaning my head against the stall wall in the women’s restroom just to get a few minutes of rest… it was time to see a doctor.
What was it the doctor said? Prediabetes or was it Insulin resistance? Isn’t that the same thing? Or does one lead to the other? What was the diet she mentioned?
I can’t even remember anymore…
Overweight and Exhausted… Feeling ready to fall asleep as I sit at my desk working. Thirsty no matter how much I drink. Burned out from trying every new diet plan that comes out and still gaining weight…
How is a person supposed to know what to eat and what not to eat when there is so much information out there. Every time I turned around, someone else was telling me all the things that I was doing wrong. I was eating too much sugar. Low fat is bad because there is extra sugar added to make it taste better. Fruits and vegetables have carbohydrates that turn into sugar so stay away from them. Butter and eggs and bacon are back on the good list. Ughh!
I was at a breaking point!
I was poisoning my body with every weight loss drug, shake, bar, and juice on the market, and here I sat, still dismayed as I stood on the scale and looked in the mirror. If I could just get back all the money I’ve spent over the years, I could hire a personal chef, get a tummy tuck or better yet, weight loss surgery (even if I realize that isn’t the way to get real change).
I was an athlete growing up. I played competitive soccer, twirling baton, and was a champ at the roller skating rink every Wednesday night during the speed skating competitions. I rode my bicycle and horses and lived outside on my trampoline…
But, life happened. At the age of 39 I was told that I had prediabetes and a nonalcoholic fatty liver. I needed to lose weight or end up on insulin for the remainder of my life. How could I have let myself go like this?
After I had injured my back 4 years earlier, doctors told me not to run or jump or do anything that could cause extra impact on my spine, so that meant no exercise, basically. All I could do now was watch the weight increase day after day and pound after pound. And, there was also family history to think about. I thought there was nothing I could do to change the path of my health anyway. This is where I was going to end up at some point no matter how hard I tried to avoid it so why even bother!
After years of eating low-fat diets, fad diets, going to the gym daily , paying a personal trainer, and having no results to show for it, I found myself sitting in the office of the liver specialist. I recall telling him that I had tried everything to lose weight and it just wouldn’t budge.
There was so much that I have tried and so many different things that I had done over the years so I began to tell my story to the doctor. Before I even got the first few sentences out, I had tears running down my face. These were not sad tears, but tears of all the frustration that I have felt over the past few years. I know I didn’t get much of the information out before the doctor started talking over me.
He said something that sounded more like lines from a Charlie Brown cartoon, “you can’t possibly be telling me the whole truth — if you eat less and exercise more, you will lose weight — that is just how the body works”. I remember walking to my truck that afternoon trying to hide my face because I knew that the river of tears was certain to show up in the next few seconds. I wanted to make sure I was completely alone and out of ear shot of anyone as quickly as possible.
I felt humiliated, I tried to play back what was said. The doctor mentioned the Atkins diet right? I hadn’t tried that one yet. Finally… a glimmer of HOPE! I can eat steak (and lots of it), bacon, butter, cheese, chicken, fish, sausage, hamburgers and hotdogs (without buns of course). This sounds way too good to be true.
I began to feel excitement writing out my grocery list with all the great things that I could eat following this high fat, high protein diet. I could give up bread and potatoes. No wonder I hadn’t had success in the past. I never realized that all those carbohydrates I consume were just creating excess sugar and adding excess pounds.
Fast forward past the initial flu like symptoms and 3 months later — HIGH CHOLESTEROL! And not just a little high. We are talking more scary than diabetes HIGH. Back to the deep dark place where no hope exists for simple easy weight loss and the chances of reversing this prediabetes thing has gone out the window. NO way was I going to stop searching for a way to end this disease.
I had to be missing something!
I remember not long after that – stumbling upon a book that talked about how you could and should eat more food to lose more weight. This new information certainly sounded too good to be true. I had already tried everything else out there, so what the heck, it’s just $10 more right? This book gave me new ideas and a list of things that I could eat. There was information on the science behind the disease and for the first time I felt like I understood what had been going on in my body. There was more focus on the positive and all the things someone gets instead of not getting. I learned about the importance of eating whole plant foods which were extremely low in fat, high in carbohydrates, and high in fiber.
My family doctor, my endocrinologist, and the liver specialist I had talked to about prediabetes/insulin resistance and fatty liver kept telling me to eat high protein and high fat and low carbohydrates, after all, those pesky carbohydrates are going to turn to sugar in your body…
I discovered quickly that I didn’t have to starve myself. I didn’t have to spend extensive periods of time in the gym. I didn’t have to spend thousands of dollars a year on diet supplements and personal trainers to get the weight to start coming off. I didn’t have to give up the vitamins that are packed in the perfect serving of an apple or a banana or orange. In fact, I could eat them often.
I was able to eat the foods that the human body was designed to consume.
When I sat in my truck on that day so many years ago, in a parking lot, with tears streaming down my face, I made a decision! The decision was that I was going to finally stop digging my grave with a fork. I was going to figure this out and when I did, I would share the secret with those that were longing for change. I had a desire in the pit of my stomach to help the next person avoid the humiliation that I felt that afternoon and for years following as I struggled to find my way back to health.
Since then, I have been able to shed 75 pounds and keep it off for 5 years now. I have reversed prediabetes, insulin resistance and fatty liver and brought my cholesterol back to normal while enjoying the most amazing and vibrant foods grown in nature. I get to cook and create new healthy choices that promote health. I get to enjoy long walks with my dog out in the fresh air and still have energy to get through the remainder of the day. Sure, it took hard work, but that work is much easier when you know that it finally gives you the healthy lifestyle that you always wanted successfully.
You no longer need to guess at what to do next. You no longer need to go at it alone.

I cleaned up my past and started teaching prediabetics how they can do the same. I watched them learn to navigate nutrition too! I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping other prediabetics achieve lasting transformation.

Having been a prediabetic myself, I’m known to work best with other prediabetic, people who are committed to their success no matter what, who are super-ready to get going and just want to know exactly what steps to take to reverse prediabetes. My clients often tell me – “just tell me what to do and I’ll do it!” Consider what you’ll do with me to be a high-octane crash course on everything you need to know to navigate nutrition and love what you eat. You will be expected to take serious and consistent action. No excuses anymore, just a very different way of thinking and full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal: to reverse prediabetes and enjoy a life of vibrant health. .
Please know I’m very selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for my programs and won’t get the results for which they would have signed up for. (It wouldn’t be fair to them.) The Your Turn to U-turn Prediabetes programs are NOT for those who have no money coming in and are absolutely, financially desperate, at least not right away. It’s been my experience that people in financial crises do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work (probably because they spend so much time worrying about where they are going to get next month’s rent check or mortgage payment.) If you fall within this category, it’s absolutely OK. We’ve all been in times of financial crisis at one point or another. Do yourself (3) favors:
